It has been an unusual christmas. Whilst others have been celebrating the festive period with friends and family, my family have been struck down by covid. The perfect timing so we have missed out on the festivities, before, after with the new year thrown into the mix as well. I watched 2025 roll in on BBC1 whilst laying bed, feeling so fatigued I couldn't even be bothered to turn off the lacklustre performance of Sophie Ellis-Baxter on stage in the build up to the new year. That is how I roll!
So, instead of joining in the festivities over the holidays, my wife and I have gone to bed early each evening, snuggled under the warmth of the duvet and watched movies most nights. In fact, we have watched the Lord of The Rings trilogy. My wife had never seen any of the films before and the last time I watched them was twenty years ago. We both thoroughly enjoyed the films and I believe that the franchise is a cinematic masterpiece by Peter Jackson that is still relevant over twenty years later.
Although forced to slow down due to illness, this time time together in the evenings watching movies was wonderful. Because of having both adult children and a toddler, work commitments and the general fast pace of life, I can't remember the last time we actually watched a film together. It is these experiences that are so important for connection and to be grounded.
So Ferris Bueller was right when he said the following in the classic 80's movie Ferris Buellers Day Off, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it".
So being ill was a blessing in disguise, we both needed to slow down and appreciate the little things in life, being present in the here and now.
Having said that, I want to make up for it next year by partying like it is going to be the last day on earth. But, if we get ill again, we can always watch 'The Hobbit'!
